Professor John Duun Visits SIS

On November 6, 2019, Renmin University of China's School of International Studies (SIS) had the honor of hosting Professor John Dunn, an eminent scholar in political science and the history of political thought. Professor Dunn is recognized worldwide as a representative of the renowned “Cambridge School” and holds the esteemed position of Emeritus Professor at King's College, Cambridge University.

During his visit, Professor Dunn delivered a captivating speech titled “Why we need a global history of political thought today,” which garnered considerable attention from both faculty members and students. His insightful presentation advocated for the inclusion of history and context in the study of political thought, reflecting the research methodology he, Quentin Skinner, and John Pocock developed. This approach, known as the “historical path” or “contextualism” of ideological history research, has exerted a substantial influence over academic circles in the West and China. For their pioneering contributions and significant impact, the three scholars are often referred to as the “three swordsmen” of the Cambridge School.

In recognition of Professor John Dunn's exceptional achievements, Renmin University of China bestowed upon him the prestigious title of Honorary Professorship.
