Ye Chenghai ’s Fifth Donation to Renmin University of China, Establishing the “Chenghai Institute for Global Development and Security”

He studied at Renmin University of China at 20 years old. Now, at 80 years old, he donates for the fifth time to Renmin University of China. Mr. Ye Chenghai’s appreciation for his alma mater is something we are moved by and grateful for. He once said, “Students never forget their teachers. No matter where they go, they always hold a sense of gratitude towards their mentors and alma mater.”

On January 15th, the donation signing ceremony for the 'Chenghai Advanced Research Institute for Global Development and Security' at Renmin University of China took place. Ye Chenghai, an alumnus of the Class of 1963 from the School of International Studies at Renmin University, founder of Salubris Pharmaceuticals Co., and Vice Chairman of the Renmin University Board of Directors, will donate stocks valued at approximately 150 million RMB through the Shenzhen Runfu Investment Development Co., Ltd. This donation will continue to support the 'Ye Chenghai Fund' and establish a special fund for the establishment and operation of the 'Chenghai Institute for Global Development and Security.'

At the donation signing ceremony for Renmin University of China, several distinguished attendees were present, including Zhang Donggang , Chair of the University Council and Chairman of the Education Foundation of Renmin University of China; Lin Shangli , the University President; and Zhang Jianming , former Executive Deputy Chair of the University Council and Vice Chairman of the Education Foundation.

Alumnus Ye Chenghai and his wife, Liao Qingqing, Director of Salubris Pharmaceuticals in Hong Kong, were both in attendance. Ye Yuxiang, Chairman of Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. and Vice Chairman of the Board of the Renmin University Education Foundation; Chen Zhiming , General Manager of Shenzhen Runfu Investment Development Co., Ltd.; Zhao Songping , Deputy General Manager of Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd.; Ling Li , General Manager of Shenzhen Linbao Trade Co., Ltd.; and Huang Yihong, Secretary-General of the Chenghai Ye Charity Foundation, also attended the ceremony.

Zheng Shuiquan , Vice Chair of the University Council, presided over the ceremony. Representatives from the university's administrative offices and the School of International Studies witnessed the event.

Ye Chenghai and Zhang Donggang signed the donation agreement. Zhang presented Ye with a donation certificate and a commemorative plaque for his contribution and gifted him the 'Complete Works of Wu Yuzhang '.

After the signing ceremony, President Lin Shangli, Mr. Ye Chenghai, Dean Yang Guangbin, and student representive Lin Zewei gave speeches reflecting upon the meaning and significance of this donation.

Lin Shangli expressed how this generous donation from alumnus Ye Chenghai shows us his unwavering beliefs, broad outlook, genuine passion, and strategic savvy. Ye has always been concerned about the construction and development of his alma mater, providing strong support for the discipline, faculty, talent cultivation, scientific research, and international exchange programs of the school, especially the School of International Studies. The establishment of the 'Chenghai Institute for Global Development and Security' through this donation not only reflects the important points of General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping's speeches and the 'Three Major Global Initiatives'; it also helps foster to 'promote global development and build a common future. '

Ye Chenghai expressed how the rich heritage and strong community at Renmin University of China, along with its motto, 'Seeking Truth from Facts,' have laid a solid foundation for his worldview, outlook on life, and values. These foundations have been his bedrock, guiding him through his ventures in politics and business. He's deeply grateful for his time at Renmin University, especially for the mentorship and leadership provided by its esteemed faculty, which served as beacons for him in his professional journey. Ye Chenghai also expressed earnest hopes for the growth and progress of the institute.

Ye's unwavering support, trust, inspiration, and sense of responsibility towards advancing the discipline of political science at Renmin University of China have consistently fueled the discipline’s progress. Leveraging the School of International Studies' robust academic foundation, outstanding research teams, innovative institutional framework, and rigorous academic ethos, Renmin University will seek to establish the Chenghai Institute for Global Development and Security as a premier hub of advanced thinking.

Lin Zewei, a graduate student in the class of 2022 of the School of International Studies, said that the experience, actions and feelings of alumnus Ye Chenghai have always inspired the majority of students at Renmin University of China and especially students at School of International Studies to strive diligently with dreams and care for the motherland and the people.

Ye Chenghai was born in 1943 into a poor farming family in Wuhua County, Guangdong Province. Later, he moved with his mother to Bing Village in Mei County, spending his childhood in a small village not far from the former residence of Ye Jianying. Demonstrating intelligence and academic excellence from a young age, he graduated from Dongshan High School in Mei County, Guangdong Province, in 1963. Subsequently, he was admitted to Renmin University of China, where he pursued undergraduate studies in the Department of Marxist-Leninist Political Science.

During his time at university, Ye Chenghai eagerly absorbed a wide range of knowledge. His greatest gains were in theoretical learning, spanning from political economy to scientific socialism, from Marxist-Leninist philosophy to the history of the Communist Party of China. This knowledge helped him establish a scientific worldview, outlook on life, and philosophical worldview, laying a solid theoretical foundation for his future work and practices. Immersed in the university's ethos of 'seeking truth from facts,' Ye developed a character marked by resilience, openness, straightforwardness, and a willingness to express his opinions boldly, without concern for personal gain or loss.

After graduation, Ye Chenghai returned to his hometown in Guangdong and began his career at the grassroots level. Through persistent effort, he grew into an outstanding senior official. Later, he ventured into business, becoming a successful entrepreneur. He has always held deep affection for his alma mater, Renmin University of China, and has provided substantial support for its development.

Alumnus Ye Chenghai funded the construction of a bronze memorial statue of President Wu Yuzhang for Renmin University of China.

Ye Chenghai donated 15 million RMB to establish the 'Chenghai International Research Fund,' aimed at supporting the School of International Relations in various areas such as academic development, talent cultivation, faculty building, scientific research, and international exchanges. To express sincere gratitude for Ye’s philanthropic contributions, the university has decided to name the Mingde International Building as the 'Ye Chenghai Building' in his honor.

2012

Ye Chenghai donated 3 million RMB to support the university's 'Traditional Chinese Studies Research Fund.'

Ye Chenghai , through Shenzhen Runfu Investment Development Co., Ltd., donated 3.5 million shares of Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. to the university (valued at 149.94 million RMB on the day of the transfer). This donation established the 'Ye Chenghai Fund,' which is aimed at constructing the School of International Studies building at Renmin University of China's new campus and supporting the university's educational development.

2024

Ye Chenghai , through Shenzhen Runfu Investment Development Co., Ltd., donated stocks valued at approximately 150 million RMB to the university. This donation continues to support the 'Ye Chenghai Fund,' with a specific allocation for the establishment and operation of the “Chenghai Advanced Research Institute for Global Development and Security” at Renmin University of China.
