UN Research Center of RUC

Founded in 1994, the UN Research Center of Renmin University of China is one of the UN research centers with lasting academic influence in domestic universities.

The UN Research Center is engaged in teaching, research and training in the field of the UN and international organizations, and serves the teaching requirements of the college for training professionals engaged in diplomacy and international exchanges. With the upsurge of personnel training of international organizations in universities in recent years, the UN Research Center has made great achievements in organizing academic research activities, establishing academic contacts, strengthening the teaching of model UN practical courses, and producing academic achievements.

The UN Research Center primarily focuses on the following key areas for their research work:

    Organizing Academic Research Activities: The center regularly invites experts, scholars, officials from national ministries and commissions, and international organizations who possess remarkable achievements and research experience across various fields. These individuals participate in academic seminars that cover different themes and scales related to the UN and international organizations. Over the past three years, the center has successfully conducted nearly 20 academic seminars. For instance, on October 15, 2021, an academic seminar titled “China and the UN: Contribution and Experience” was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of China's restoration of its legitimate seat in the UN. On June 21, 2021, a theme lecture on “Sharing Experience in Working for the UN” took place. Additionally, on November 12, 2020, a theme lecture discussing the “International Exploration of China's Social Organizations” was organized. The center also arranges visits and study trips for teachers and students, such as a visit to the UN Office in China on September 28, 2021.

    Establishing Academic Ties: The center has developed strong academic relationships with renowned research institutions such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Foreign Affairs College, Beijing Language and Culture University, China University of Political Science and Law, Fudan University, and others. It has also established collaborative partnerships with various organizations including the UN Association of China, the Office of the UN Coordinator in China, the Representative Office of the UN Development Programme in China, the Peacekeeping Training Center of the Ministry of National Defense, and the Research Institute of the Ministry of Commerce. These collaborations involve joint academic conferences, training activities, and practical teaching initiatives. For example, on September 1, 2020, Pu Ping participated in the international seminar on “Strengthening Multilateralism and Creating a Better Future” hosted by the UN Association of China. Additionally, on October 17, 2020, Pu Ping took part in the first International Organization Forum hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University.

    Strengthening Model UN Education and Guiding Student Association Activities: The center emphasizes the teaching of practical courses related to Model UN and provides guidance to the activities of the student association known as the RUC Model Federation. Each year, the center selects and organizes teams to participate in Model UN conferences held by both international and domestic universities. Furthermore, the center conducts various forms of teaching and practical activities in this field. In recent years, RUC students have actively participated and achieved remarkable results in numerous Model UN conferences at both national and international levels.

    Generating Academic Achievements: The center boasts influential scholars in the field of international organizations, namely Professor Pu Ping and Professor Fang Changping. They actively contribute to the development of teaching materials and theoretical research in relevant fields. In 2018, their joint project titled “Improving China's Voice in International Organizations and Reforming the Talent Training Mode of International Organizations” received recognition by winning the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in Higher Education and the first prize of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Award. Associate Professor Xu Ying, another esteemed member of the center, is a renowned expert in NGO research. She has extensively provided policy advice and facilitated personnel training for various social organizations such as the China Association for Science and Technology and the Amity Foundation, making a significant social impact. Moreover, in recent years, the center's members have published numerous high-quality academic papers in prestigious CSSCI journals like Teaching and Research and International Forum.
